Digital transformation begins with technology, but it only becomes a reality when the operation generates trust.

For decades, mining was associated with heavy machinery , physical infrastructure , and field operations . Today, the sector is undergoing a profound transformation driven by data , artificial intelligence , automation , and connectivity . Modern mining relies on systems capable of processing information in real time , coordinating autonomous teams , and optimizing production through algorithms . This presents an opportunity to increase the efficiency of an industry facing productivity challenges , but it also poses a major challenge: cybersecurity .

As mining operations incorporate connected technologies , their risk exposure also increases . Autonomous trucks , IoT sensors , SCADA systems , data analytics platforms , and hybrid infrastructures are all part of an increasingly complex and interdependent ecosystem . However, many organizations implement the innovation first and only then assess how to protect it .

Cybersecurity should not be an afterthought in the digital transformation process . Recent incidents demonstrate that the most vulnerable link is not always within the company itself. In many cases, attacks originate from third parties with access to operational environments . A compromised credential , a poorly managed remote connection , or a vendor with insufficient controls can become the gateway to critical systems , directly impacting production .

A Claroty study indicates that 76% of cyberattacks against the sector originated from third-party access to OT and IoT environments , while 72% of organizations acknowledge lacking complete visibility into these external connections. This demonstrates that the challenge also lies in securely managing the entire ecosystem connected to operations. When this occurs, a problem that begins in the corporate environment can affect essential physical processes , generating operational disruptions , financial losses , and risks to business continuity .

Furthermore, the threat landscape has evolved and is no longer limited to ransomware or traditional cybercrime . According to CrowdStrike’s 2026 Global Threat Report , there was an 89% increase in AI-powered attacks and a 42% increase in the exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities before their public disclosure. In industrial environments , this significantly reduces the time available to detect and contain incidents before they reach critical systems .

Operations linked to strategic minerals , such as copper , lithium , and rare earth elements , have become assets of geopolitical interest . Advanced groups seek access to sensitive information , intellectual property , or even to position themselves within critical infrastructure in anticipation of future scenarios. Research based on the World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 reveals that 64% of companies believe geopolitical tensions have increased their exposure to cyber threats . This finding reinforces the convergence between digital security, economic competitiveness, and technological sovereignty .

During the 2026 Mining Innovation Summit , my presentation addressed the need to incorporate digital resilience from the very beginning of technological transformation projects , rather than as a corrective measure afterward . Any artificial intelligence , automation , or digitization initiative developed without a cybersecurity strategy from the outset introduces a potential vulnerability for the business .

Conversely, when cybersecurity is part of the initial architecture , it becomes an enabler of growth , allowing for confident innovation , accelerated technology adoption , and reliable operations . The next stage of mining will be increasingly digital . The question is whether companies are prepared to protect what will make that innovation possible . Digital transformation only scales when operations have confidence in the systems that support them .
